There are four distinct geographical regions:

  • Atlantic Coast: Rugged Granite similar to the coast of Maine and Cape Cod
  • Bay of Fundy/Annapolis Valley: 162 kilometres of lush orchards and vineyards, rich in Red African Soil, similar to Virginia
  • Northumberland Shore: Offers the warmest summer ocean north of the Carolinas due to its shallowness
  • Scottish Highlands of Cape Breton Island: Magnificent highlands similar to California

Nova Scotia has:

  • 7,459 km (4,625 mi) of coastline
  • Area of 55,487 km. sq. (21,425 sq. mi.)
  • Length of 550 km. (350 mi)
  • Highest elevation 554 metres (1,800ft)
  • Highest waterfall 150 metres (500 ft)

Nova Scotia's Canso Causeway is the world's deepest.

Nova Scotia has 59 automated lighthouses.

Sambro Island Lighthouse is the oldest operating lighthouse in North America.

No point is more than 56 km (33 mi) to the sea.

The Bay of Fundy's tides are the worlds highest: 16.6 metres (54ft); Fundy's twice daily tidal change is equal to the daily discharge of all the world's rivers combined - 100km cubed of water; Nova Scotia has North America's only tidal power plant.

Halifax Harbour is the World's Second Largest Natural Harbour after Sydney Australia and the World's Largest in water volume.

The Annapolis Valley's beautiful and unique Acadian Dykes Drive (near Wolfville) dates to the 1680's

Cape Breton Island is the missing West Coast of present day Scotland.

Climate: "Mild Maritime" due to the Gulf Stream (golfing often extends into December; the average temperature:

  • July - 21.8C (71F)
  • January - 0C (32F)

Wildlife:

  • Birds - 260 species
  • Bald Eagles - largest population east of the Rockies
  • Mammals - 87 species
  • Whales - 21 species

Education:

  • 9 universities;
  • 7 colleges
  • highest ratio to population in North America
  • Canada's oldest university is in Halifax, 1789
