The following is a sampling of the many famous Nova Scotians who have made their mark in the world.

Sir Thomas Chandler Haliburton (1796-1865) - Father of American humor, his works greatly influenced young Mark Twain.

Joseph Howe (1804-1873) - Premier of Nova Scotia 1863, Lt. Governor 1873 Considered one of the finest journalists, orators and politicians in the British Empire. He established freedom of the press and speech in the overseas British Empire in Province House, Halifax 1840. Howe symbolized Nova Scotia's devotion to self government and its total opposition to joining Canada in 1867. Howe was the most beloved politician in Nova Scotia history.

Sir Samuel Cunard (1787-1885) - Haligonian and founder of the world famous Cunard Steamship Line, Halifax, 1840.

Abraham Gesner (1797-1864) - Discoverer of kerosene oil, 1846, changing world society.

Senator Comeau (1859-1911) - Great Acadian Statesman.

Captain Joshua Slocum (1844-1909 - World's first sailor to sail alone around the world.

Alfred Fuller (1885-1973) - Founder of the Fuller Brush Empire.

Sir Provo Wallis - Second Lieutenant on the HMS Shannon at the battle of the Chesapeake and the Shannon off Boston in 1813. He won the battle which resulted in the U.S. Navy Motto: "Don't give up the ship"... being first stated in Halifax Harbour. He rose to Admiral in the Royal Navy.

William Hall (1838-1904) - He joined the Royal Navy in 1852, the first Black and the second Canadian to win the Victoria Cross for his heroism during the Indian Mutiny in India, 1857. The first Canadian to win the VC was Alexander Dunn, born in York (now Toronto), who was awarded the VC for his courage during the Crimean War, the date of deed being 25 October 1854. The dates of publication of the awards in the London Gazette were Dunn: 24 Feb 1857 (the first such list of VCs) and Hall: 1 Feb 1859.

Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) - Bell moved to Baddeck, Nova Scotia, in 1885, where in 1909, his silver dart airplane performed the first powered flight in the British Empire and where in 1919, Bell launched the world's first hydrofoil. Near his final resting place is the world famous Bell Museum in Baddeck.

Edna Lockhart (1917- ) - Canada's only female player in the US Women's Pro-baseball League, 1935 - New York City's Bloomer Girls

Isaak Walton Killam (1885-1955) - Financier and Investment Dealer. In 1955, he was the wealthiest man in Canada, known as "the mystery man of Canadian finance".

Donald Mckay (1810-1880) - Famous Naval Architect and Shipbuilder whose Mckay shipyard in Boston built the world's largest clipper ship, "The Great Republic", and also the "Flying Cloud", which broke the world's record for sailing between New York City and San Francisco.

Chief Membertou (1505-16-10) - Most famous Mi'kmaq Chief in history, of valuable assistance to Jacques Cartier in 1534, and to the survival of Champlain in 1605.

George Dixon (1870-1909) - World's first Black to win a World Boxing Title (1890), first to win more than two world titles and the first by Marquis of Queensbury Rules.

John E. Rovensky (1880-1970) - Industrialist and banker. Became the first VP of the Bank of America and established ACF Industries, which produced the H-Bomb.

Portia White (1910-1968) - World famous Black Classical Singer known as the "Marion Anderson of Canada".

Bucknam Pasha (1866-1919) - Founded the Turkish Navy and was titled Pasha by the Sultan of Turkey.

Cyrus Eaton (1883-1979) - Wealthy Industrialist, founded the U.N.'s Pugwash Thinker's Conference in Nova Scotia, first crack in the Iron Curtain Nobel Peace Prize 1995.

Alex Coville (1912- ) - World famous modern realist painter, Wolfville, N.S.

Enos Collins (1774-1871) - The richest man in British North America (Halifax) through his privateering fleet, War of 1812, which helped Lord Nelson at Trafalgar.
