E. Ross MacCulloch, A short biography

Born in Halifax in May, 1950, he considered himself fortunate that his parents provided and encouraged lessons in the arts and music. From a very early age, Ross showed a strong talent for painting and art.

Photo of Ross In his teens, Ross studied first with John Cook and Alan Wylie. When he finished highschool, he then went to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He then began a long friendship with Anthony Law and Jane Shaw , with whom he studied art and enjoyed many painting expeditions.

When he was 16 years old, Ross established his first gallery connection at Zwicker's Gallery in Halifax. He was 20 when his first one-man show was held at Gallery 1667.

Following his first show, Ross steadily worked on his art and a few years later embarked to Europe taking an art history course offered through the University of Calgary. His travells took him to Rome, Florence and Italy. After that, he often went to Europe travelling to Greece and Italy. He had attributed his great love of the classics to his time in Europe.

Ross then took a degree in modern languages at Dalhousie University in Halifax. Photo of Ross

In the late 1970's, Ross found gallery's in other areas, including the prestigious Klinkoff Gallery in Montreal, Kensington Gallery in Calgary, and the Art Emporium in Vancouver, to represent him. By 1980 he was well represented across Canada.

In 1983, James Hunt Barker, who had galleries in New York, Palm Beach and Nantucket and who used to be Jack Gray's dealer featured a show of Ross's work in Palm Beach. Ross had work in the Darvish Collection in Naples Florida and in a gallery in Key West.

In the late 80's and early 90's, Ross stayed in Nova Scotia living first at Duncans Cove and later in Chester.

In 1993, Ross succumbed to AIDS and died quietly at home in August of 1993.

In the last two years of his life, Ross lobbied government to provide a more accessable home care for the terminally ill. His efforts, cut short by his death, did not go unnoticed and the advent of home care services was accelerated by his efforts.
