Portfolio In Detail - Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society

NSLPS Home Page The Nova Scotia Lighthouse Protection Society, or NSLPS, is an organization of unpaid volunteers dedicated to the preservation of Nova Scotia's lighthouse heritage.

NSLPS was started in the mid 1990's to attempt to stem the tide of destruction of lighthouses no longer in service and to protect and organize the devolution of lights to community and heritage groups. The biggest problem with trying to save over 165 lighthouses was how to inform the public and provide public access to the huge amount of material gathered about the lighthouses.

The answer was a database driven website that could query an existing database of lighthouse information on all the lighthouses, gathered by Tim Hall of CCG, and an additional database built by Tower Software Inc. for the thousands of images and serve up pages. Active Server pages were used to fill page templates with the requested information and display the results on the site.

The website includes the following features:
  • Revolving random lighthouse image on the home page.
  • Information on over 165 lighthouses.
  • An index of lighthouses that can be visited with the visitor details.
  • News and events pages.
  • Photo gallery of lighthouses.
  • Recordings of lighthouse and harbour sounds.

Maintained by volunteers, the site continues to grow with the addition of new information on a regular basis.
